Freedom

Freedom

Freedom: it is our God given birth right, and simultaneously the biggest and gravest responsibility of all. Lots of our human brothers all over the world do not have the same luxury, many of them are even born in captivity. We, the 'free' world, do not appreciate the freedom our forefathers shed their blood and tears for, fought for in many a war against numerous oppressors. We abuse our freedom wherever and whenever we like.

We are free to love and marry whomever we choose, we are just as free to divorce when things don't work out. We are free to choose our own friends, whatever race or political believes. We are free to choose our professions, whether we wish to work long and hard hours or rather not have a career and spend more time with family and friends. Free.
We are free and have the right to vote, to speak our mind, to believe in any God we like or …..not at all.
We have the right of free press, the right to demonstrate against bad decisions, the right to strike when we feel mistreated.
We have the right to defend ourselves......

What do we do?
We lust in stead of love, when we lust for something else we just get up and go after it, mothers and fathers leaving their children along the way. We make friends and mistreat them with total disregard of truth or ethics and then cut them off. We work and moan about the hours, the wage, our boss, but don't do much to improve our situation. When we die we never say: I wish I would have worked more.......
We vote, not for parties that can turn our world around but because we have an acquaintance or relative or because it is a family tradition. We say whatever we like, often without any knowledge just because we like to hear ourselves rant, hurting many people in the process. We will believe in anything as long as it will give us personal gain, like forgiveness.
We fill our papers and magazines with stories that we let others censor, we let Petroula tell us the weather.
And every time someone dies it was in self defense.......

While pretending to excersise our rights as a free individual, we always seem to hurt others, maybe it is time we start to take our rights a bit more serious, look a bit harder at the responsibilities that go hand in hand with being free...... you see, our fellow man has the same rights to happiness, he does not need to suffer from ours.

Someone asked me last week if I ever think about what I write...... what do you think?
